During the 2024 Walking Festival, Dr Dion Dobrzynski, Postdoctoral Impact Fellow from Bath Spa University, led an incredible event for us.

We listened to an immersive retelling of Olaf Stapledon’s short story, ‘The Man Who Became a Tree’, using an augmented forest soundscape.  We listened sitting under a beech tree in Alexandra Park.

Dion has kindly shared the audio with us, so why not download it and find yourself a beech tree (or any tree) to sit under and experience being a tree.

Download or stream directly from Soundcloud here.

Thank you to Dion for sharing this with us, and to Professor Annie Mahtani and Teddy Hunter of the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR), University of Birmingham, for providing the forest soundscape recordings.

Thanks also to Bath Urban Treescape for putting us in touch with Dion and providing the photo of a beech tree by Hugh Williamson – it is on Rob’s Route tree trail.
